Karo Rei

Science Fiction Writer
Exploring AI, Ethics, and Europe

Based in Kyoto and Warsaw

Karo Rei is a Japanese novelist and essayist based in Kyoto and Warsaw.

She writes science fiction and contemporary suspense, exploring themes of AI ethics, surveillance, identity, and the quiet tension between technology and human choice, often set in Europe.

Academic Focus

Alongside her work as a novelist, Karo Rei is deeply engaged in the study of AI ethics, political theory, and the institutional design of AI-assisted crisis prediction systems.

She is preparing for admission to a university in Poland in 2027, where she intends to pursue studies in either Political Science or a technology-related field such as computer science or engineering, depending on the program that best supports her research goals.

Her long-term academic interest focuses on how artificial intelligence can be integrated into democratic governance and public institutions without undermining human autonomy.

Her primary research interest lies in the development of AI-assisted early warning and risk-assessment frameworks—systems designed to anticipate social instability, conflict escalation, economic shocks, and large-scale emergencies before they reach critical thresholds.

Rather than replacing human decision-making, she is interested in models where AI functions as a stabilizing analytical layer within public institutions, enhancing foresight, accountability, and strategic resilience.

Her preparation includes ongoing academic work at a Japanese university and participation in study programs in Poland, building a foundation in political institutions, governance theory, data analysis, and European security frameworks.

Books & Writing

Karo Rei writes science fiction and contemporary suspense novels, as well as essays in English, focusing on near-future Europe, AI-driven societies, and ethical conflict. Her published works are available internationally:

Chess

Outside of writing and academic preparation, Karo Rei is an active chess player.
She participates in chess tournaments, including open tournaments in Poland, alongside her creative and academic work. She values chess as a discipline that sharpens strategic thinking, patience, and long-term decision-making.

Future Plans

Karo Rei hopes to attend the Frankfurt Book Fair in autumn 2026, with the aim of expanding her international publishing network and academic connections.

Karo Rei is also planning a two-month stay on the island of Roatán, Honduras, in 2026. During this period, she may spend part of the time in Prospera ZEDE. While on the island, she is considering producing a short mockumentary film featuring a character she designed herself, although this project will depend on the progress of her university entrance preparations.

She is also exploring the possibility of spending time at Madeira’s digital nomad village in Portugal as part of her ongoing research into emerging global communities and experimental living environments.
