Exploring AI, Ethics, and Europe

Based in Kyoto and Warsaw

Karo Rei is a Japanese science fiction novelist and essayist based in Kyoto and Warsaw.
Her work explores AI ethics, surveillance, identity, and the quiet tension between technology and human choice, often set against contemporary Europe.

Academic Focus

Alongside her work as a novelist, Karo Rei is deeply engaged in AI ethics, political theory, and the institutional design of AI-driven crisis prediction systems.

She is preparing for admission to a university in Poland in 2027 to pursue Political Science, with a long-term research focus on how artificial intelligence can be integrated into democratic governance without undermining human autonomy.

Her primary academic interest lies in the development of AI-assisted early warning and risk assessment frameworks—systems designed to anticipate social instability, conflict escalation, economic shocks, and large-scale emergencies before they reach critical thresholds. Rather than replacing human decision-making, she is interested in models where AI functions as a stabilizing analytical layer within public institutions, enhancing foresight, accountability, and strategic resilience.

Her preparation includes ongoing academic work at a Japanese university and participation in study programs in Poland, building a foundation in political institutions, governance theory, and European security frameworks.
